Archives you run into every day
ZIP is what Windows and macOS create when you choose "Compress", what Google Drive and Dropbox hand you when you download several files at once, and how font packs, WordPress plugins and stock-photo bundles are distributed. TAR and TAR.GZ come from the Unix world: GitHub source releases, Linux software, exported server logs and the .tgz packages npm produces. A lone .gz is usually a single compressed log, database dump or backup. Tinyvert opens all of them in a browser tab, with no 7-Zip, WinRAR or terminal required.
Three ways to get the files out
After you drop an archive, its row expands into a list of every file inside, complete with the folder path each one had.
One file: every entry has its own download button, so you can pull a single PDF out of a 200-file archive without extracting the rest.
Everything, separately: the row's Download button saves the files one after another. Your browser may ask permission to download multiple files the first time.
Everything, as a ZIP: "Download all as ZIP" re-packs the contents into one ZIP built locally. It is the quickest way to turn a .tar.gz into a .zip that a Windows colleague can open with a double-click.

One compressed file, not a bundle
RAR, 7z and encrypted ZIPs are not supported. If an archive asks for a password, you will need the program that created it.
Why unzip in a browser?
Usually because you do not have the right program to hand. Windows 10 opens ZIP in Explorer but not .tar.gz; a locked-down work laptop will not let you install anything; an iPhone or Chromebook has no obvious home for a tarball; and installing a desktop archiver for a single file feels excessive. A tab that extracts the files and then forgets them is often the more sensible option.
It is also the more private one. The archive is read into memory on your device, decompressed there and never sent anywhere, so payroll exports, legal bundles and customer data stay on your machine. Large archives are limited by your device's memory — anything you would normally email is fine, while a huge backup may fail on a phone. The page works offline after your first visit.
Related tools
Going the other way, Zip Files bundles any files into a compressed ZIP. If the archive contained PDFs you need to break apart or convert, Split PDF and PDF to JPG run in the same tab under the same no-upload rule.
How to unzip files online — step by step
1
Drop the archive onto the page or click "Choose files" — ZIP, TAR, TAR.GZ, TGZ and GZ are accepted.
2
The row expands to list every file inside with its path; use the small button beside any file to save just that one.
3
Click the row's Download button to save all the files one after another, or "Download all as ZIP" to bundle everything into a single ZIP.
Frequently asked questions
Can I open a password-protected ZIP?
No. Encrypted archives are not supported and will be refused. You will need the password and the tool that created the archive. Ordinary stored or deflated ZIPs open without any trouble.
Which archive formats are supported?
ZIP, TAR, TAR.GZ (also written .tgz) and single-file GZ. RAR and 7z are not supported.
Why does my browser ask permission to download several files?
The row's Download button saves the files one after another, and browsers ask before a page triggers multiple downloads. Allow it once and the rest follow. If you would rather have one download, use "Download all as ZIP".
Can I turn a .tar.gz into a .zip?
Yes. Drop the tarball, then click "Download all as ZIP". The contents are re-packed into a single ZIP on your device, ready for anyone on Windows to double-click.
Does this work on iPhone and Android?
Yes, in any modern mobile browser. The archive is read and extracted on the phone itself, and the files are saved through the normal download prompt.
Is the archive uploaded anywhere?
No. It is read into your browser's memory, decompressed there and discarded when you close the tab. Nothing is sent to a server, so confidential exports stay on your machine.
