Lower = smaller file. 80–90% is visually lossless for photos.

    Private by design

Your files are processed by your own device using WebAssembly and your browser's built-in codecs. Nothing is uploaded, logged or stored.

    Fast & offline-ready

No queue, no waiting for a server. Once the page has loaded it even works without a connection.

Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari on Windows, macOS, Linux, Android and iOS. No app to install.

    PNG vs WebP

PNG has been the default format for graphics with transparency since the late 1990s. It is lossless, universally supported and easy to work with, but its compression is inefficient by modern standards; a photographic PNG can easily weigh several megabytes. WebP, developed by Google and released in 2010, uses prediction techniques borrowed from the VP8 video codec. In lossy mode it produces files roughly 25–35% smaller than an equivalent JPG and often 50–80% smaller than a PNG, and, crucially, it keeps alpha transparency.

For web developers this is a big deal. Google's PageSpeed Insights explicitly flags "Serve images in next-gen formats", and WebP is the most widely supported answer. Smaller images mean faster Largest Contentful Paint, lower bandwidth bills and happier mobile visitors.

When to convert PNG to WebP

    • Website assets: hero images, product shots, screenshots in documentation, blog illustrations.
    • App and game bundles: reduce download size while keeping transparency for sprites and UI elements.
    • Email and messaging: fit under attachment limits without ugly JPG artefacts on transparent edges.
    • Storage: archive large PNG collections at a fraction of the size.

    How the converter works

Your browser already contains a WebP encoder; Tinyvert simply drives it. Each PNG is decoded to raw pixels with the browser's built-in image decoder, drawn onto an off-screen canvas, and re-encoded as WebP at your chosen quality. The whole pipeline runs on your device, so nothing is transmitted, no account is required and the tool works offline. Batches are processed one after another with a per-file progress bar, and "Download all as ZIP" packages the results without touching a server.

    Choosing the right quality

WebP's quality scale behaves similarly to JPG's. For most graphics, 85% is indistinguishable from the source. Photos can often drop to 75%. Screenshots with lots of crisp text benefit from 90–95% to avoid slight softening around letters. Because you see the output size immediately, it is easy to try two or three settings and pick the smallest acceptable one.

Have JPGs to convert as well? Use JPG to WebP. Want to shrink files without changing format? The image compressor handles PNG, JPG and WebP alike.

How to convert png to webp — step by step

    1. Drop PNG files onto the page or click "Choose files". Transparent PNGs are fine.

    2. Set the quality. 80–90% gives big savings with no visible difference; go lower for thumbnails.

    3. Files convert instantly and show their new size next to the original.

    4. Download each WebP, or all of them as a ZIP.

    Frequently asked questions

Does PNG to WebP keep transparency?
Yes. WebP supports a full 8-bit alpha channel, so transparent PNG logos, icons and cut-outs convert cleanly with their transparency intact.
    Is WebP lossless or lossy?
WebP can be either. Tinyvert uses lossy WebP with the quality slider, which is what gives the large size savings. At 85–90% quality the result is visually indistinguishable from the PNG for photos and most graphics.
    Which browsers support WebP?
All of them: Chrome, Edge, Firefox, Safari (since 14), Opera and Samsung Internet. WebP has been safe to use on the open web since 2020.
Should I convert every PNG on my site?
Photos and complex graphics — yes, the savings are large. Tiny icons under a few kilobytes gain little. Images with sharp text at 100% quality may look better as lossless PNG; test with the slider.
Can I convert WebP back to PNG later?
Yes, with the WebP to PNG tool. Keep your original PNGs as masters, because lossy WebP cannot be converted back to a pixel-identical PNG.
