Compress Video Online

Make a video small enough for WhatsApp, email or Discord by choosing a quality level and a maximum resolution. Encoding runs on your device, so nothing is uploaded.

Free: up to 5 files per batch · Files never leave your device · Paste from the clipboard works too

Never enlarges. 720p is plenty for chat apps.

    Private by design

Your files are processed by your own device using WebAssembly and your browser's built-in codecs. Nothing is uploaded, logged or stored.

    Fast & offline-ready

No queue, no waiting for a server. Once the page has loaded it even works without a connection.

    Works everywhere

Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari on Windows, macOS, Linux, Android and iOS. No app to install.

Why phone videos are so big

A modern phone records at a bitrate chosen for editing headroom, not for sending. A minute of 4K footage from a recent iPhone or Pixel can run past 300 MB, and even 1080p clips grow by well over 100 MB a minute. Screen recordings, action-camera footage and exports from editing apps are padded in the same way. Chat apps and mail servers were never built for files that size, so a 40-second clip bounces back from an email.

    What the two settings do

    OptionEffectPick it when
Quality: HighKeeps most detail; modest savingYou may edit the footage again
Quality: MediumBalanced; usually a large savingSharing in chat or by email
Quality: LowSmallest file; soft on fine detailPreviews and slow connections
Max resolutionDownscales to 1080p, 720p, 480p or 360p; never upscalesIt will be watched on a phone anyway

Resolution is the bigger lever. Halving the width and height removes three quarters of the pixels, and a 720p clip still looks sharp on a phone screen. Combine 720p with Medium for a sensible first attempt, then try Low or 480p if the result is still too large.

    How the compression works

Unlike MOV to MP4 or the general Video Converter, which copy the existing streams whenever they can, Compress Video always re-encodes the picture, because that is the only way to make it smaller. Decoding and encoding run through the browser's WebCodecs API, hardware-accelerated where your device allows. The video is written as H.264 when the browser can encode it, otherwise AV1 or VP9, and the audio becomes AAC or Opus or is copied across unchanged. Every result is a standard MP4, and the status line reads "re-encoded" once a file is done. Subtitle tracks and chapters are not carried over.

    Size limits worth knowing

    • Gmail attachments stop at 25 MB and Outlook.com at 20 MB; larger files are turned into a download link.
    • Discord's free tier accepts uploads of only around 10 MB.
    • WhatsApp, Messenger and Telegram re-compress whatever you send; a file that is already small loses far less in that second pass.

    Private, offline and free

Your video is read into the browser's memory and encoded by code running on your own device, so it is never uploaded, logged or stored anywhere. After the first visit the tool also works offline. Up to five videos go through in one batch, each with its own progress bar, and you can download results singly or as a ZIP built locally. Large files are limited by your device's memory. Compression needs Chrome, Edge, Brave or Opera, Safari 17 or newer, or Firefox 130 or newer.

Only need part of the clip? Trim Video cuts the start and end without any re-encoding, and Video to GIF turns a few seconds into a shareable loop.

How to compress video online — step by step

    1. Drop up to five MP4, MOV, MKV, WebM, TS or M4V videos into the drop zone, or click "Choose files".

    2. Choose a Quality (High, Medium or Low) and a Max resolution (Original, 1080p, 720p, 480p or 360p).

    3. Conversion starts automatically; follow each file's progress bar — the status line reads "re-encoded" when it finishes.

    4. Download the smaller MP4, grab everything as a ZIP, or use the Share button to send it to another app.

    Frequently asked questions

How much smaller will my video get?
It depends on how generously the source was encoded. Phone recordings and screen captures carry a lot of spare bitrate, so Medium quality at 720p often cuts them to a fraction of their size. Footage that has already been compressed for the web shrinks less.
Does compressing a video lose quality?
A little, yes. Compression re-encodes the picture, so some detail is traded for size. High keeps the loss hard to notice; Low is meant for previews and slow connections. Resolution is only ever reduced, never upscaled.
What size does a video need to be for email?
Gmail accepts attachments up to 25 MB and Outlook.com up to 20 MB; beyond that the mail client swaps the file for a link. Try 720p and Medium first and check the result before going lower.
Which format does the compressed video come out as?
Always MP4. Video is encoded as H.264 when your browser can produce it, otherwise AV1 or VP9, and audio is written as AAC or Opus or copied across. MP4 plays on every phone, computer and messaging app.
Can I compress a video on my phone?
Yes. Chrome on Android and Safari 17 or newer on iOS both support the encoder the tool relies on. Large files are limited by your device's memory, so very long 4K recordings may need a laptop.
