Sizes

16, 32 and 48 cover Windows and browser tabs; 256 is for Vista+ large icons and macOS.

    Private by design

Your files are processed by your own device using WebAssembly and your browser's built-in codecs. Nothing is uploaded, logged or stored.

    Fast & offline-ready

No queue, no waiting for a server. Once the page has loaded it even works without a connection.

    Works everywhere

Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari on Windows, macOS, Linux, Android and iOS. No app to install.

One icon file, several sizes inside

An .ico is a small container. Windows and browsers pick whichever image inside it best fits the space they are drawing: the tiny version for a browser tab, a medium one for the taskbar, the largest for Explorer's thumbnail view. A single-size icon gets scaled on the fly and looks soft, which is why a proper favicon or app icon ships with several sizes. Tinyvert renders each size you tick from one source image and packs them into a single file.

    SizeWhere it is usedDefault
16 pxBrowser tabs, bookmarks, address bar, Windows title barsYes
24 pxSmall toolbars and older Windows list viewsNo
32 pxTaskbar, desktop at small icon size, Alt+TabYes

64 and 128 pxLarger Explorer views, high-DPI scaling of smaller slotsNo
256 pxExplorer extra-large view, installers, Electron app iconsYes

    How the icon is built

Your image is decoded by the browser, then scaled down step by step rather than in one jump, which keeps edges crisp at 16 and 32 pixels instead of turning them to mush. Each size is stored as a PNG-compressed entry with full alpha transparency — the modern encoding that Windows Vista and later, every browser and Electron all read. A non-square source is centred on a transparent square, so a wide logo becomes a square icon with clear space above and below rather than being squashed. Nothing leaves your device: the icon is assembled in memory and handed to you as a download, and the page works offline after the first visit.

    Favicons, shortcuts and app icons

    • Websites: drop the file in your site root as favicon.ico. Browsers request that path automatically and search engines show it beside your result. Modern sites add PNG or SVG icons too, but the .ico remains the one that works everywhere.
    • Windows shortcuts and folders: right-click, Properties, Change Icon, and browse to the file.
    • Desktop apps: Electron packagers and Windows installers expect an .ico that includes a 256 px entry.

    Getting a sharp result

Start with a square image of at least 256 pixels; an SVG logo is ideal because it is rendered cleanly at every size. Simple shapes and strong contrast survive the drop to 16 pixels, fine lettering and thin lines do not, so many brands use a single letter or mark rather than the full wordmark. Crop a photo-style image to a square in any editor first, or shrink an oversized file with Resize Image. To render an SVG at a fixed pixel size for other uses, see SVG to PNG; to pull the picture back out of an existing icon, use ICO to PNG.

How to convert png to ico — step by step

    1. Drop a PNG (or JPG, WebP or SVG) into the drop zone — a square image of at least 256 px gives the best result.

    2. Tick the Sizes you want in the icon; 16, 32, 48 and 256 px are selected by default, with 24, 64 and 128 px also available.

    3. When the row finishes, download the .ico file and drop it in your site root as favicon.ico or assign it to a Windows shortcut.

    Frequently asked questions

Which sizes should a favicon contain?
16, 32 and 48 px cover tabs, bookmarks, the taskbar and Explorer views, and 256 px serves high-resolution displays and installers. Those four are ticked by default; 24, 64 and 128 px are there if a particular application asks for them.
Will the icon work on older versions of Windows?
Each size is stored as a PNG-compressed entry, which Windows Vista and every later version, all browsers and Electron understand. Only Windows XP and earlier expect the older BMP encoding.
    Is transparency preserved?
Yes. The alpha channel of your PNG is carried into every size, so rounded corners and cut-out shapes stay clean on any background.
My logo is wider than it is tall — what happens?
It is centred on a transparent square at each size rather than stretched. A wide wordmark will therefore come out small; a square emblem or single letter makes a far better icon.
Can I start from a JPG, WebP or SVG?
Yes, all three are accepted. SVG gives the sharpest result because it is rendered freshly at each size. A JPG has no transparency, so its background becomes part of the icon.
How do I add the favicon to my website?
Save it as favicon.ico in the site root. Browsers request that path on their own, and you can also declare it with <link rel="icon" href="/favicon.ico">.
