Free: up to 5 files per batch · Files never leave your device · Paste from the clipboard works too

    Private by design

Your files are processed by your own device using WebAssembly and your browser's built-in codecs. Nothing is uploaded, logged or stored.

    Fast & offline-ready

No queue, no waiting for a server. Once the page has loaded it even works without a connection.

    Works everywhere

Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari on Windows, macOS, Linux, Android and iOS. No app to install.

Get the words out of a PDF

A PDF is designed to look the same everywhere, not to give its text up easily. Selecting a paragraph in a viewer often grabs a column from the wrong place, hyphens cling to line ends, and copying a 60-page report by hand is nobody's idea of an afternoon. PDF to Text reads the whole document in one pass and hands you a plain .txt file you can open, search and paste from anywhere.

People use it to quote a passage from a journal article or a court ruling, to search a manual for one error code, to count the words in a thesis draft, to load a price list into a spreadsheet, or to feed a contract into a translator, a text-to-speech app or any program that wants plain text rather than a document.

    Text-based or scanned? Check first

This is the one thing to know before converting. A PDF exported from Word, Google Docs, LaTeX, InDesign or a web page carries a text layer, and the extraction will be complete. A PDF made by a scanner or a phone camera app is a stack of photographs: it may look like text, but there is nothing to extract, and Tinyvert will report "no text found". There is no OCR step.

    What the output looks like

The text layer is extracted with PDF.js, Mozilla's PDF engine, in reading order. Each page is written as its own block, so you can still tell where page 12 ends and page 13 begins. The file is saved as UTF-8, so accented and non-Latin scripts survive and it opens in any editor without an encoding prompt.

It is plain text, so fonts, bold, colours, images and page layout are gone, deliberately. Tables and multi-column pages come out in the order PDF.js encounters them, which is usually right but worth a glance when figures matter.

    Pairing it with other tools

    • Only need chapter three? Cut it out with Split PDF first, then extract the text of the smaller file.
    • Need a picture of the page rather than its words, for a slide or a post? PDF to JPG renders it.
    • Combining several reports with Merge PDF before extracting keeps everything in a single .txt.

    Private by design

Extraction happens inside your browser tab: the PDF is read into memory, processed on your own device and never uploaded or stored anywhere, so the tool is safe for payslips, legal documents and anything under NDA. Up to five PDFs can be converted in one batch, each with its own progress bar, and you can download the text files individually or together as a ZIP built locally. Very large documents are limited only by your device's memory.

    Frequently asked questions

Why does it say "no text found"?
The PDF is a scan: each page is a photograph with no text layer behind it. This tool extracts existing text only; it does not perform OCR. Try selecting a word in your PDF viewer. If nothing highlights, there is no text to extract.
    Does it keep the formatting?
No. The output is plain text: fonts, bold, colours, images and page layout are dropped. Each page becomes one block of text in reading order, which is exactly what you want for quoting, searching or pasting into another tool.
Can I extract the text of one page only?
The whole document is converted, one block per page, so the page you need is easy to find in the .txt. For a long document, cut the pages out first with Split PDF and convert the smaller file.
What encoding is the .txt file?
UTF-8, so accented letters, Greek, Cyrillic, Arabic and CJK characters survive and the file opens in Notepad, TextEdit, VS Code, Word or Google Docs.
    Are tables and columns handled?
Text is extracted in the order PDF.js reads it, which is usually right for ordinary pages. Multi-column layouts and complex tables can interleave, so check numbers against the original when they matter.
    Is my document uploaded?
No. The PDF is read into your browser's memory, processed on your own device and never sent to a server, logged or stored.
