    What happens to the video?

An MP4 file is a container holding at least two streams: a video track, usually H.264 or HEVC, and an audio track, almost always AAC. Tinyvert opens the container, decodes only the audio stream with your browser's built-in decoder and feeds the raw samples to the LAME MP3 encoder, which runs as WebAssembly on your device. The picture is never decoded, which is why a feature-length film converts in a fraction of the time a video re-encode would need. Sample rate and channel count are preserved, so a stereo 48 kHz soundtrack becomes a stereo 48 kHz MP3.

Why rip the audio from an MP4?

    • Lectures, webinars and conference talks you only need to listen to on the commute.
    • Interviews and podcasts captured by a camera or screen recorder.
    • Live music, rehearsal takes and voice notes filmed on a phone where the picture adds nothing.
    • Language courses, sermons and audiobooks that are distributed as video.
    • Reclaiming space: a 500 MB recording of a one-hour meeting becomes about 85 MB of audio at 192 kbps.

The result is a plain .mp3 that plays in every music app, car stereo and podcast player, and drops straight onto a timeline in Audacity or GarageBand for editing.

    Which bitrate should you pick?

    BitrateBest for
64 kbpsSpeech only, smallest possible files
96 kbpsVoice recordings and lectures where size matters
128 kbpsCasual music listening on earbuds or in the car
192 kbps (default)Transparent for most listeners; the sensible all-rounder
256–320 kbpsMusic you care about, good headphones, keeping the best copy

Remember that the MP3 can never sound better than the AAC track it came from. Phone cameras often record audio at 96–128 kbps, so choosing 320 kbps only makes the file larger.

Private, offline and limited only by memory

The MP4 is read into the browser's memory and never leaves your computer or phone: there is no upload and nothing to delete afterwards. After the first conversion the page and the encoder are cached, so the converter keeps working offline. The trade-off is that the input file and the finished MP3 both sit in RAM while the job runs, so large files are limited by your device's memory; a multi-gigabyte recording may succeed on a laptop but fail on a phone. Five files run per batch, each with its own progress bar, and the ZIP behind "Download all" is assembled locally too.

How to convert mp4 to mp3 — step by step

    1. Drop up to five MP4 or M4V files into the drop zone, or click "Choose files".

    2. Pick a bitrate from the Bitrate menu; 192 kbps is the default and suits most recordings.

    3. Each file shows its own progress bar while the audio track is decoded and encoded to MP3 on your device.

    4. Download each MP3 on its own, save everything as a ZIP, or tap Share on a phone to send it to another app.

    Frequently asked questions

Does converting MP4 to MP3 lose quality?
A little, in theory. The audio inside an MP4 is normally AAC, which has to be decoded and re-encoded as MP3. At the default 192 kbps the difference is inaudible to most people; choose 256 or 320 kbps if the soundtrack is music you care about.
Can I extract only part of the video?
Yes. Cut the section you want with Trim Video first (it copies the streams, so nothing is re-encoded), then drop the trimmed MP4 in here.
How big will the MP3 be?
Roughly 1 MB per minute at 128 kbps, 1.4 MB per minute at 192 kbps and 2.4 MB per minute at 320 kbps, however large the video was.
Why does my file fail to convert?
The usual reasons are an MP4 with no audio track at all (some screen recordings) or an unusual audio codec the browser cannot decode. Mainstream browsers decode AAC, MP3, FLAC and Opus without trouble.
Does it work on an iPhone or Android phone?
Yes, in Safari 17 or newer on iOS and in Chrome, Edge, Brave or Opera on Android. Large files are limited by your device's memory, and a Share button sends the MP3 straight to another app.
Are title and cover-art tags kept?
If the MP4 carries title, artist or album metadata it is written into the MP3's ID3 tags. Camera and screen recordings rarely have any, so you may want to tag the file in your music app afterwards.
