Convert MP3 to OGG

Convert MP3 to OGG using the Opus codec, the modern successor to Vorbis that sounds better at half the bitrate. Encoded by your browser, nothing uploaded.

Ignored for lossless formats.

    Private by design

Your files are processed by your own device using WebAssembly and your browser's built-in codecs. Nothing is uploaded, logged or stored.

    Fast & offline-ready

No queue, no waiting for a server. Once the page has loaded it even works without a connection.

    Works everywhere

Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari on Windows, macOS, Linux, Android and iOS. No app to install.

Plainly: you get Opus, in an Ogg container

Many "MP3 to OGG" tools still write Vorbis, the codec from 2000. Tinyvert does not. Your MP3 is decoded by the browser, resampled to 48 kHz and encoded with the browser's own Opus encoder, then wrapped in an Ogg container and saved with a .ogg extension. That is exactly how WhatsApp, Telegram and Signal store voice notes, so the result plays wherever those do, plus VLC, every current browser, Android and Discord.

    Why Opus rather than Vorbis

    • Better sound per kilobit. Listening tests consistently rank Opus at 96 kbps alongside Vorbis and MP3 running at considerably higher bitrates.
    • One codec for speech and music. Opus switches between a speech model and a music model inside a single stream, so a podcast with a jingle is handled well throughout.
    • Standardised and mandatory. Opus is an IETF standard (RFC 6716) and a required codec for WebRTC, which is why every browser ships an encoder for it.
    • Still maintained. Opus continues to gain encoder improvements; Vorbis has seen none of significance in over a decade.

    Bitrate guide

    Opus bitrateComparable MP3Use for
    64 kbps128 kbpsPodcasts, audiobooks, lectures
96 kbps160–192 kbpsMusic on the go, game soundtracks
128 kbps (default)256 kbpsMusic for home listening
160–192 kbps320 kbpsWhen you want headroom

Choosing 256 or 320 kbps is allowed but rarely worth it: you cannot recover detail the MP3 never had, and the file will be larger than the source.

    Lossy to lossy, honestly

Every lossy re-encode discards a little more, so treat the Opus file as a convenient copy rather than a new master. If you also own the WAV or FLAC original, convert from that instead with the Audio Converter. Title, artist, album and cover art are carried across into Vorbis comments, the tag system Ogg files use, so your library stays organised.

    Where it will not play

Old iPods, most car head units and a few game engines that expect Vorbis will not accept an Opus stream. For those, keep the MP3 or use MP3 to M4A. Converting back is a single step with OGG to MP3, and if size is the only concern, Compress Audio keeps the MP3 format at a lower bitrate.

How to convert mp3 to ogg — step by step

    1. Drag MP3 files into the drop zone or click "Choose files" (up to five per batch).

    2. Choose a bitrate. 128 kbps is the default and is transparent for most music; 64 kbps is ample for speech.

    3. Conversion starts automatically. Each row shows a progress bar and then the size difference.

    4. Save the files one at a time or as one ZIP. On phones, Share sends a file to Telegram, Discord or any other app.

    Frequently asked questions

Is the output Vorbis or Opus?
Opus. Tinyvert writes Opus audio inside an Ogg container with a .ogg extension. Opus is the newer codec and the better one at every bitrate; Vorbis is effectively frozen.
Why is the OGG file 48 kHz when my MP3 was 44.1 kHz?
Opus always runs at 48 kHz internally, so the encoder resamples on the way in. It is a transparent step and every Opus player expects it.
Will Discord, Telegram and Android play it?
Yes. Opus is the native voice codec of Discord, WhatsApp and Telegram, and Android, Chrome, Firefox, Safari 17 and VLC all decode it.
Can I use the files in Unity or Godot?
Check first. Those engines import Ogg Vorbis and may reject an Opus stream in a .ogg file. Web games and browser audio are fine.
Does converting MP3 to OGG improve the sound?
No. Whatever the MP3 encoder discarded is gone for good. Opus simply stores what is left in fewer bytes.
Is the OGG smaller than the MP3?
Usually. At the default 128 kbps the output is well under half the size of a 320 kbps MP3 and about two-thirds of a 192 kbps one, with no audible loss for most listeners.
