Why switch from JPG to WebP?

JPG has served the web since 1992, and it is still the format every camera produces. But its compression is decades old. WebP, Google's modern replacement, encodes the same photograph in a file that is 25–35% smaller at equal quality, and it supports transparency and animation as well. Since Safari added support in 2020, WebP now works on every mainstream browser, which is why Google Lighthouse and PageSpeed Insights recommend it under "Serve images in next-gen formats".

For a photo-heavy page the effect is significant: lower Largest Contentful Paint times, better Core Web Vitals, less bandwidth for visitors on mobile data and lower hosting bills. E-commerce stores in particular see measurable conversion improvements from faster image loading.

How this JPG to WebP converter works

Modern browsers contain a native WebP encoder. Tinyvert decodes each JPG with the browser's image decoder, respects the EXIF orientation flag so rotated phone photos come out the right way up, draws the pixels onto an off-screen canvas and asks the browser to encode WebP at your selected quality. The photo never leaves your device, and the entire batch, including the ZIP, is assembled locally. You can process wedding albums, product catalogues or client photos without any privacy concerns.

    Picking a quality setting

    • 90%+ — portfolio and photography sites where detail is paramount.
    • 80% — the default; ideal for blogs, product listings and general web use.
    • 65–75% — thumbnails, background images and anything displayed small.

Remember that quality percentages are not directly comparable between formats: WebP at 80% generally looks like JPG at 85–90%. The size shown next to each converted file lets you find the right balance in seconds.

    Beyond format conversion

Camera JPGs are also far larger in pixel dimensions than any screen needs. Combining WebP conversion with a resize to 1600–2000 px on the longest edge often yields files a tenth of the original size. The compressor can do both in one pass, and the resizer offers precise control over dimensions. To go the other way, see WebP to JPG.

    Frequently asked questions

How much smaller is WebP than JPG?
At the same visual quality, WebP files are typically 25–35% smaller than JPG. Because you also pick the quality level, converting an over-sized camera JPG at 80% commonly halves its size.
Does converting JPG to WebP lose quality?
JPG is already lossy, and re-encoding always involves some change, but at 80–90% WebP quality the difference is not visible on screen. Keep your original JPGs as masters if you may need to re-export later.
Can I use WebP for Facebook, Instagram or WordPress?
WordPress has supported WebP uploads since version 5.8. Most social networks accept WebP uploads and re-encode them anyway. A few older CMSs and email clients still prefer JPG.
    Is WebP supported in Safari?
Yes. Safari 14 (macOS Big Sur, iOS 14) added full WebP support in 2020, so WebP now works on essentially every device in use.
Does it keep EXIF and colour profiles?
EXIF metadata is dropped (smaller files, more privacy). Colours are converted to sRGB, which is what browsers display anyway.
