Free: up to 5 files per batch · Files never leave your device · Paste from the clipboard works too

    Private by design

Your files are processed by your own device using WebAssembly and your browser's built-in codecs. Nothing is uploaded, logged or stored.

    Fast & offline-ready

No queue, no waiting for a server. Once the page has loaded it even works without a connection.

    Works everywhere

Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari on Windows, macOS, Linux, Android and iOS. No app to install.

HEIC vs PNG: what is the difference?

HEIC is Apple's default camera format, built on the HEVC video codec. It is superb at squeezing photographs into small files, but it does so with lossy compression, and it is poorly supported outside the Apple ecosystem. PNG, by contrast, is a 30-year-old lossless format that every operating system, browser, image editor and content management system understands. PNG also supports full alpha transparency, which JPG does not.

Converting HEIC to PNG therefore gives you the most faithful, most compatible copy of your image possible. The trade-off is size: PNG files are typically five to ten times larger than the HEIC they came from, because no information is thrown away.

When should you choose PNG over JPG?

    • Screenshots and UI captures from an iPhone, where JPG artefacts would blur crisp text and edges.
    • Graphics, logos and illustrations saved as HEIC that contain flat colours or transparency.
    • Archival masters you intend to edit heavily later: starting from a lossless file avoids generational quality loss.
    • Printing at large sizes where every bit of detail helps.

For ordinary holiday snaps that you simply want to share or upload, JPG is usually the better choice. It is a fraction of the size and visually identical at 90% quality.

How Tinyvert converts HEIC to PNG privately

The converter embeds libheif, the same open-source decoder used by GIMP, ImageMagick and many Linux distributions, compiled to WebAssembly so it can run inside your browser. When you add a file, the decoder reads the HEVC-encoded image data and hands the raw pixels to the browser's Canvas API, which writes a standard PNG. All of this happens in memory on your device. We never see the file, and there is no server that could be breached, subpoenaed or simply forgetful about deleting your photos.

Because the decoder is downloaded once (about 350 KB compressed) and cached, subsequent conversions start instantly. Batch conversions run sequentially with a per-file progress bar, and the ZIP download is assembled in the browser too.

    Opening HEIC without converting

If you only need to view a HEIC file, Windows 11 can install the free "HEIF Image Extensions" from the Microsoft Store (the HEVC video extension is a separate paid item). On older Windows versions and many Android devices conversion remains the simplest route. Our guide on opening HEIC files on Windows covers every option.

How to convert heic to png — step by step

    1. Drop your .heic or .heif files onto the drop zone, or click "Choose files".

    2. Wait a moment while each file is decoded — there is no quality slider because PNG is lossless.

    3. Download files individually, or grab everything at once with "Download all as ZIP".

    Frequently asked questions

Why is my PNG so much bigger than the HEIC?
PNG is lossless, so it stores every pixel exactly, while HEIC uses aggressive HEVC compression. A 2 MB HEIC photo commonly becomes a 10–20 MB PNG. That is normal. If size matters more than perfect fidelity, use HEIC to JPG instead.
Does HEIC to PNG keep transparency?
Yes. If the HEIC contains an alpha channel (rare for camera photos, common for exported graphics) the transparency is preserved in the PNG.
    Is the conversion truly lossless?
The decode step reproduces the pixels stored in the HEIC exactly, and PNG encoding adds no further loss. What you get is the highest-quality version of the photo that exists outside the original file.
Can I convert many HEIC files at once?
Yes. Drop up to 5 files at a time on the free plan or unlimited with Tinyvert Pro, then use "Download all as ZIP".
Does it work on a Mac or iPhone?
It works in Safari, Chrome and Firefox on macOS and iOS. Macs can already open HEIC, but PNG is still handy for design tools, screenshots and cross-platform sharing.
