What is a HEIC file?
HEIC (High Efficiency Image Container) is the photo format Apple adopted with iOS 11 in 2017. It stores pictures using the HEVC/H.265 video codec, which packs the same image into roughly half the space of a JPG at equivalent quality. Every iPhone since the 7, plus recent iPads and many Android flagships, saves camera shots as .heic by default.
The catch is compatibility. Windows needs a paid codec, older Android phones cannot open it, most web forms reject it, and plenty of desktop software from photo printers to Microsoft Office still expects JPG. That is why "how do I open a HEIC file?" is one of the most searched photo questions on the internet.
Why convert HEIC to JPG?
Universal support. JPG opens on literally every device, browser, app and website made in the last 25 years.
Sharing and uploads. Job applications, marketplaces, insurance claims and school portals frequently only accept JPG or PNG.
Editing. Legacy versions of Photoshop, Lightroom, GIMP and Paint.NET do not read HEIC natively.
Printing. Photo kiosks and online print services almost always want JPG.
How this converter works
Most online converters upload your photos to a server, convert them there, and keep a copy for an unspecified time. Tinyvert does the opposite. When you drop a file, a small open-source HEIF decoder (libheif compiled to WebAssembly) runs inside your browser tab, decodes the image, and the browser's own Canvas API re-encodes it as JPG at the quality you choose. There is no upload, no queue, no account, and nothing for us to store or leak. Close the tab and every trace is gone.
Because the work happens on your own hardware, conversion speed depends on your device rather than on our servers. A modern laptop converts a 12-megapixel photo in well under a second; a phone takes a moment or two. Large batches simply run one after another with a live progress bar for each file.
Tips for the best results
Keep quality at 85–95% for photos you plan to print or edit. Drop to 70–80% for email attachments and web uploads.
Need transparency or pixel-perfect output? Use HEIC to PNG instead.
Want smaller files after converting? Run the JPGs through the image compressor or the resizer.
To stop your iPhone creating HEIC in the first place, go to Settings → Camera → Formats and choose "Most Compatible".

Frequently asked questions
Is it really free to convert HEIC to JPG?
Yes. You can convert up to 5 photos per batch for free, as many times as you like. Tinyvert Pro is a one-time US$9 upgrade that removes the batch limit and ads, but it is entirely optional.
Are my photos uploaded anywhere?
No. The HEIC decoder runs inside your browser using WebAssembly. Your photos never leave your computer or phone, which also means the conversion works offline once the page has loaded.
Will I lose quality when converting HEIC to JPG?
JPG is a lossy format, so there is a tiny amount of recompression. At the default 90% quality setting the difference is invisible to the eye. Choose HEIC to PNG if you need a lossless result.
Does it keep EXIF data such as date and location?
Metadata is stripped during conversion. This is a privacy benefit when sharing photos, but if you need GPS or capture-date tags preserved, keep the original HEIC alongside the JPG.
Can I convert HEIC to JPG on Windows 10 or 11?
Absolutely. This converter works in Chrome, Edge and Firefox on Windows without installing the paid HEIF codec from the Microsoft Store.
What about Live Photos or burst shots?
A Live Photo HEIC contains a still image plus a short video. Tinyvert extracts the still frame. For burst sequences stored in a single HEIC container, the first image is converted.
