Convert GIF images to PNG and keep their transparency. Animated GIFs give you a clean still of the first frame, converted entirely in your browser.

Why GIF is a poor format for still images
GIF dates from 1987 and shows its age in two ways. Every image is limited to a palette of 256 colours, so
photographs and gradients have to be dithered into speckled approximations. And its transparency is a single on/off
bit per pixel: a pixel is either fully see-through or fully solid, with no soft edges in between. Those limits were
acceptable on dial-up, and the format survived because it could animate. For anything that does not move, PNG
replaced it long ago, with 16 million colours and a proper 8-bit alpha channel.
Why people convert GIF to PNG anyway
Logos, buttons and clip art rescued from old websites, intranets and email signatures that only exist as .gif.
Upload forms, CMS templates and app stores that reject GIF or treat every GIF as a video.
A poster frame or thumbnail from an animated GIF, for a blog post, a video player or a social-media card.
PowerPoint and Google Slides, which play an inserted GIF when you only wanted a static picture.
Archiving: PNG is the format every editor, operating system and browser treats as a first-class citizen.
What happens to transparency and animation
The browser's own decoder reads the GIF, including its transparent palette entry, and Tinyvert draws the result onto
a canvas before encoding a 32-bit RGBA PNG. Transparent pixels stay transparent, so a cut-out logo still sits cleanly
on any background. What the conversion cannot do is soften the edges: the GIF never stored partial transparency, so
the hard, slightly jagged outline you see against a coloured background in the GIF is exactly what you get in the PNG.
For an animated GIF only the first frame is decoded. That is usually what you want for a still, since most animations
open on their cleanest frame. If you need the motion rather than a snapshot, GIF to MP4
turns the whole animation into a compact video, and Video to GIF goes the other way.

File size and batches
Converting does not add detail, so do not expect a cleaner image, and because the PNG stores full colour and alpha for
every pixel it is occasionally a little larger than a small, flat GIF. Once the PNG is in hand,
PNG to WebP makes the lightest file for the web. Up to 5 GIFs convert per batch, each with
its own progress bar, and the ZIP download is assembled on your device. Very large files are limited by your device's
memory, since the GIF is decoded in RAM.
How to convert gif to png — step by step
1
Drop GIF files onto the page or click "Choose files". Up to 5 go in one batch.
2
There are no settings. Each GIF is decoded, its first frame is drawn to a canvas and saved as a PNG, with a progress bar per file.
3
Download each PNG from its row, or use "Download all as ZIP" to save everything at once.
Frequently asked questions
Does GIF to PNG keep transparency?
Yes. A GIF marks one palette entry as transparent, and those pixels are carried across as fully transparent in the PNG. Opaque pixels stay opaque; nothing is filled with white.
What happens to an animated GIF?
PNG is a still format, so you get the first frame. That is ideal for a thumbnail or poster image. To keep the motion, use GIF to MP4 instead, which plays everywhere and is much smaller.
Will the PNG look better than the GIF?
It will look identical. A GIF holds at most 256 colours, and converting cannot invent colours that were never stored. What you gain is a format every modern app accepts and that can be edited without further loss.
Why is the PNG sometimes bigger than the GIF?
The PNG is written as a full 32-bit RGBA image rather than an indexed palette, so a tiny 256-colour logo can grow a little. Run it through PNG to WebP or the compressor if size matters.
Is anything uploaded?
No. The GIF is decoded by your browser and the PNG is encoded with the Canvas API on your own device. Files never leave your computer or phone.
