Why convert lossless FLAC to MP3?

FLAC is the right format for a music collection: it is a bit-perfect copy of the CD or the studio master, it compresses to roughly 60% of raw PCM, and it keeps tags and artwork. The problem is everything outside your computer. Car head units read MP3 from a USB stick but seldom FLAC. Older iPods and most pocket players never supported it. Bluetooth cannot carry lossless audio anyway, so the extra data is discarded before it reaches your earbuds. And a 128 GB phone fills up quickly at 300 MB an album. An MP3 copy solves all of that while the FLAC stays safe at home.

    Where FLAC files come from

    • CD rips made with Exact Audio Copy, dBpoweramp, fre:ac or foobar2000.
    • Purchases from Bandcamp, Qobuz, 7digital, HDtracks and artists' own stores.
    • Archives of live recordings traded in lossless form.
    • Masters exported from a DAW for distribution.

    What a typical album becomes

    Format45-minute albumSaving
    FLAC (CD quality)around 290 MB
    MP3 320 kbps108 MB63%
    MP3 256 kbps86 MB70%
    MP3 192 kbps65 MB78%
    MP3 128 kbps43 MB85%

For most car and phone listening, 192 or 256 kbps is the sweet spot. Reserve 320 kbps for good headphones, and 128 kbps for a stick that must hold your entire collection.

Tags, artwork and track order survive

A folder of files called 01 - Track.mp3 is only useful if the player knows the artist, album and track number. Tinyvert reads the Vorbis comments and the embedded cover image from each FLAC and writes them as ID3 tags in the MP3, so the album appears correctly sorted with its artwork in a car display, iTunes, a Walkman or any phone app. Sample rate and channel count are preserved as well.

Decoded and encoded on your device

The FLAC is decoded with the browser's own decoder and encoded by LAME running as WebAssembly, so the track never leaves your machine: nothing is uploaded, logged or stored, and the page works offline once it has been used. A four-minute track takes a few seconds. When you need the reverse, FLAC to WAV produces uncompressed audio for editing, and WAV to FLAC brings your own recordings into the lossless fold. If the goal is simply smaller files, Compress Audio accepts FLAC too. The trade-offs are laid out in MP3 vs WAV vs FLAC.

How to convert flac to mp3 — step by step

    1. Drop up to five FLAC files into the drop zone or click "Choose files".

    2. Pick a bitrate from the Bitrate menu: 192 kbps by default, 256 or 320 kbps for the closest match to the original.

    3. A progress bar runs per track while it is decoded and the LAME encoder writes the MP3 on your device; the row then shows the size saving.

    4. Download each MP3 individually or all of them as a ZIP, or tap Share on a phone.

    Frequently asked questions

Does converting FLAC to MP3 lose quality?
Yes, by design. FLAC is lossless and MP3 throws away detail the ear is least likely to notice. At 256 or 320 kbps almost nobody can tell the two apart in a blind test, so keep the FLAC as your master and treat the MP3 as a travel copy.
Which bitrate should I use for a car stereo?
192 kbps is a good balance of size and sound for road noise; 256 kbps if the USB stick has room. Nearly every head unit plays MP3 up to 320 kbps.
Are album art, track numbers and tags kept?
Yes. FLAC stores metadata as Vorbis comments plus an embedded picture, and Tinyvert writes them into the MP3's ID3 tags, so albums stay sorted and the cover shows up in the car.
Why not just play the FLAC?
Most phones and computers can. Car head units, older iPods, Bluetooth speakers fed from a USB port and many small music players cannot, and a FLAC album takes three to five times the space of an MP3 one.
Can I convert a whole album at once?
Five tracks per batch, each with its own progress bar, with a single ZIP download. Tinyvert Pro, a one-time US$9 purchase, removes the limit for full albums.
Does it work on my phone?
Yes, in Safari 17 or newer on iPhone and in Chrome, Edge, Brave or Opera on Android. Large files are limited by your device's memory, which is rarely an issue for individual tracks.
