A quick way to decide
Sending it to someone and unsure what they use? MP3.
Going into an editor or a hardware device? WAV.
Keeping a master and the source is WAV, AIFF or FLAC? FLAC.
Needs to be as small as possible for a modern app? OGG.
Heading for an iPhone, Apple Music or iMovie? M4A.
One rule covers the lossy formats: do not pick a bitrate below the source. Converting a 128 kbps MP3 at 320 kbps gains nothing; converting it at 64 kbps throws away more.
Video in, audio out
The converter accepts MP4, MOV, MKV and WebM as readily as audio files. The browser decodes only the audio track, whether AAC from a phone recording, Opus from a screen capture or MP3 from an old download, and the video frames are never touched. That makes it a quick route from a lecture recording to an MP3 or from a concert clip to a FLAC. The dedicated Video to MP3 page does the same with MP3 fixed as the output.
What is preserved
Sample rate and channel count carry across unchanged, except that Opus output is always 48 kHz, as the Opus standard requires. Title, artist, album and cover art are copied into every format that can hold them; only WAV cannot. Filenames are kept with the new extension, so a batch of tracks keeps its order.
What runs in your browser
Decoding uses the browser's built-in codecs through the WebCodecs API. Encoding depends on the target: LAME for MP3 and libFLAC for FLAC, both compiled to WebAssembly and loaded on first use; the browser's own AAC and Opus encoders for M4A and OGG, with a WebAssembly AAC fallback; and WAV is written directly as 16-bit PCM. After the first visit the page and the encoders are cached, so the tool works offline. Up to five files per batch are free; Tinyvert Pro, a one-time purchase, lifts that limit.
Single-purpose alternatives
If the only aim is a smaller file, Compress Audio defaults to a lean 96 kbps MP3 and shows the percentage saved. For the common studio case, WAV to MP3 is the same engine with fewer menus.
How to convert audio files — step by step
1
Drop up to five audio or video files into the box, or click "Choose files".
2
Open the Output format menu and choose MP3, WAV, FLAC, OGG or M4A. A Bitrate menu appears for the lossy formats.
3
Conversion starts on its own; watch each row progress — the size change is shown when a file finishes.
4
Download files one by one, as a ZIP, or share them to another app on your phone.
Frequently asked questions
Which formats can I convert between?
Input: MP3, WAV, FLAC, OGG, Opus, M4A, AAC and the audio track of MP4, MOV, MKV and WebM video. Output: MP3, WAV, FLAC, OGG (Opus) or M4A (AAC), chosen from the Output format menu.
Which output should I choose?
MP3 for anything that must play everywhere; M4A for Apple devices; OGG for the smallest files on modern players; WAV for editing; FLAC for lossless storage. There is a longer comparison in MP3 vs WAV vs FLAC.
Can I convert a video to audio here?
Yes. Drop an MP4, MOV, MKV or WebM and only its audio track is decoded; the picture is discarded.
Can one batch produce several formats?
The Output format menu applies to every file in the batch. Convert once per format you need.
Does it work on a phone?
Yes, in Chrome, Edge, Brave or Opera on Android and in Safari 17 or newer on iOS. On desktop add Firefox 130 or newer. Very large files are limited by your device's memory.
